OMAHA, Neb. – The North Dakota State volleyball team rolled past North Dakota, 3-0, in the quarterfinal round of the Summit League Championship at Baxter Arena on Thursday night.
With the win, NDSU improves to 21-10 (13-5 Summit) on the season and has won 10 of the last 11 meetings against North Dakota (12-18, 9-9 Summit). The Bison advance to the semifinals for the first time since 2018 and will face second-seeded Omaha tomorrow at 7:00 p.m. at Baxter Arena.
Ali Hinze led the way with 10 kills, six digs and three blocks for the Bison. Syra Tanchin just missed a double-double with 10 digs and nine kills. Kelley Johnson also added 27 assists, eight digs and three service aces to round out the top performers.
North Dakota began the match running out a to a 13-9 advantage by the midway point. The Bison then worked their way back to steal their first lead, 14-13, following an attack error. Both teams then traded points until NDSU assembled six straight points to close the frame and win the set, 25-20. Michelle Artis connected on four kills on seven attempts in the stanza.
Both teams battled through the second frame that saw a match-high 13 tie scores and seven lead changes. The Fighting Hawks were able to grab a late, 19-17, lead to force an NDSU timeout. The Bison responded with a 5-1 run to steal the edge, 22-20, following a service ace from Johnson. NDSU went on to hold off North Dakota the rest of the way to win the set, 25-22.
NDSU started fast the third frame running out to a 13-6 lead after three straight service aces from Logan O’Brien. The Bison continued to surge increasing their lead to 21-13 following a solo block from Tanchin. NDSU went on to close out the set, 25-17, and the match, 3-0.
