OMAHA, Neb. – The Summit League announced the 2021 #SummitBSB All-League Teams and individual award winners Wednesday with North Dakota State shortstop Bennett Hostetler taking home the top accolade as the league’s Player of the Year. Hostetler is the second Bison in program history to earn the award (Tim Colwell; 2014).
Hostetler never cooled off in a season that saw him lead the league with 31 RBI and rank second in Summit League action in both home runs (7) and batting average (.387). He had 14 multiple-hit games, including a stretch of seven straight from April 24-May 14 to help the Bison set a program record with 20 league victories.
Regular season champion Oral Roberts secured the three remaining individual awards as Isaac Coffey was named the Pitcher of the Year, Joshua Cox was selected as the Newcomer of the Year and Ryan Folmar earned his fifth Summit League Coach of the Year honor.
Coffey went 6-0 in league play and posted a 1.64 ERA. He fanned 44 in 44.0 innings of work while leading the league with three complete games and two shutouts. Cox batted .364 and ranked third among league batters with 40 hits. Fourteen of those went for extra bases as he had a league-best 11 doubles to go with a triple, two homers and 20 RBI in 26 league contests.
Folmar led the Golden Eagles to their 19th regular season title and fifth under his watch. ORU finished 19-7 and either won or split each of its seven league series as the Golden Eagles led the league in both team batting average (.320) and team ERA (3.87).
Hostetler, Coffey and Cox all landed on the first team with the latter two being joined by seven of their Golden Eagle teammates on that squad. Hostetler was one of four Bison named to the first team while Omaha was represented by third baseman Mike Boeve, who was also the only freshman to be honored.
Coffey was the only repeat first teamer from those selected in 2019 when the last league awards were last doled out. The Goleta, Calif., native and Cox were joined on the first team by catcher Alec Jones, first baseman Jake McMurray, second baseman Ryan Cash, outfielder Caleb Denny, designated hitter Jordan Wiley, utility player Hunter Swift and starting pitcher Matt Gaskins. The three Bison joining Hostetler in earning first-team accolades were outfielder Jake Malec, starting pitcher Cade Feeney and relief pitcher Parker Harm.
NDSU and Omaha each had four representatives among the 13 members on the All-Summit League second team. Oral Roberts and South Dakota State each had two while Western Illinois first baseman Alex Dorethy was the lone Leatherneck to earn an all-league distinction. He also earned all-league second team honors as the designated hitter in 2018.
Three other members of the second team joined Dorethy as repeat honorees. Omaha shortstop Keil Krumweide and Oral Roberts outfielder Blake Hall filled similar spots in 2019, while Bison sophomore Max Loven was a first-team selection as a freshman and landed on the second team in 2021.
NDSU third baseman Tucker Rhode, outfielder Jack Simonsen and righthander Evan Sankey joined Loven on the second team. Joining Krumwiede from the Mavericks were second baseman Mason Prososki, who had a league-best 16 steals in league action, outfielder Chris Esposito and designated hitter Eduardo Rosario.
SDSU catcher Derek Hackman, who led all league players with eight home runs, was joined on the second team by Jackrabbit righthander Drew Beazley. Hall and relief pitcher Adam Scoggins were the two Golden Eagles selected.
There were no all-league or individual awards given out in 2020 due to the pandemic.
Four of the league’s five teams will embark on Omaha Thursday-Saturday for The Summit League Baseball Championship presented by U.S. Air Force Special Warfare. The action starts Thursday at 1 p.m. CT when top-seeded Oral Roberts takes on fourth-seeded South Dakota State. All games will be televised on Midco Sports Network and streamed at thesummitleague.org/watch and on the new Midco Sports Plus app.
