FARGO, N.D. – The North Dakota State women’s basketball team grinded out an 86-82 win over South Dakota in overtime on Thursday night at Scheels Center.
After ending regulation tied, 71-71, the Bison (14-7, 8-3 Summit) assembled six unanswered points to open up an 82-77 advantage in overtime after Heaven Hamling drained a jumper with 44 seconds to play. Following a pair of South Dakota (11-12, 7-5 Summit) free throws, Hamling once again came up clutch with a jumper to make the score 84-79 with 11 seconds remaining. Macy Guebert answered for the Coyotes to cut the edge back down to two, 84-82, with a triple. However, Elle Evans knocked down a pair of free throws to seal the 86-82 victory.
With the win, the Bison improved to 14-7 (8-3 Summit) and moved to 9-0 at home this season. It also marked the first time since the 1999-00 season that NDSU has swept the regular season series against South Dakota. Additionally, head coach Jory Collins earned his 250th career win. He has amassed a 250-111 overall record spanning 12 seasons, which includes eight at Emporia State.
Hamling paced the Bison with a game-high 28 points to go along with a season-best eight rebounds and four steals. Evans filled her stat line with 18 points, seven rebounds and game-high four blocks, while Taylor Brown contributed 13 points with three rebounds and two steals. Abby Schulte also reached double figures in scoring for the second straight game with 12 points.
As a team, NDSU shot 42.5 percent (31-73) from the field with nine different players contributing in the scoring column. The Bison also hauled in 42 rebounds in comparison to the Coyotes’ 34.
NDSU will be back in action hosting South Dakota State on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 1:00 p.m.
