FARGO, N.D. – Nine different players reached the scoring column as the North Dakota State women’s basketball team rolled past Valley City State, 96-45, on Monday night at Scheels Center.
Heaven Hamling paced the Bison (2-0) with a game-high 21 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field. She also added a game-high four steals with four assists and five rebounds. Taylor Brown tallied a season-high 14 points, while Elle Evans netted a season-best 12 points with six rebounds. Abbie Draper rounded out the top performers with a season-high 13 points and three blocks.
As a team, the Bison shot 53.3 percent from the field (32-60) and 83.3 percent from the free throw line (25-30). NDSU also netted 50 points in the paint and scored 40 points off of turnovers. The Bison bench poured in 31 points.
NDSU got off to a fast start opening up a quick 11-2 lead after Hamling knocked down a three-pointer to force a Valley City State timeout. The Bison then pushed their lead up to 16, 20-4, after Abby Graham went coast-to-coast for a layup at the 5:42 mark of the first quarter. NDSU didn’t look back from there and led after two quarters of play, 62-20.
The Bison continued to surge into the third quarter after Abby Schulte created a steal and found Evans in transition for the layup, 66-20, at the 8:37 mark. NDSU then began to put the contest away building its largest lead of the game, 85-32, following a layup from Emily Behnke with 8:31 to play. The Bison, who never trailed in contest, went on to pick up the 96-45 win.
NDSU will continue its homestand hosting Minnesota on Thursday night. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
